Habitats

The NW Region Biodiversity Audit includes a comprehensive review of the habitats present in the region.  It is based on the broad habitat classification developed for the UK Steering Group Report; 31 of the 37 types in the Steering Group Report are identifiable in the region.  These are further subdivided into a total of 82 habitats that include 30 of the key habitats in the Steering Group Report.  It should be noted that for the purposes of the regional classification some of the UK key habitats have been further subdivided into habitats which are considered to be distinct and easily recognisable, thus the 30 UK Key Habitats actually appear as 37 key habitats in this Audit. Finally, the classification has been extended to include habitats which are not recognised as key in the Steering Group Report.

The list of habitats in the region has since been updated and numerical targets produced for those habitats in line with the UK BAP Review in 2007. Further details of these can be accessed in the Regional Habitat Targets section.
