Species
The species identified in this Audit are those which are found in North West England, that is, they:
- have, or are likely to have, resident wild population, or
- are regular migrant (occurring in at least 3 out of 5 years), or
- have become extinct recently but remain a conservation issue in the region,
and meet one or more of the following criteria:
- they are UK Priority Species (a revised version of the former ‘short’ and ‘middle’ lists species in the 1995 Report) and / or UK Species of Conservation Concern (formerly ‘long’ list species);
- they are nationally recognised rare / scarce species;
- they are endemic taxa found only in the UK;
- they have been identified as regionally important species
Collectively they are termed Species of Conservation Importance in North West England, and in total number 1939.
Please note - the content in this section are taken directly from the 1999 Audit and have not been updated. Please see the UKBAP website for an update list of species identified nationally.
